Can I use Scalable Vector Graphics (.SVG) in RoboHelp 11 projects?

I need to import .SVGs into my RoboHelp 11 HTML5 project, but that file type doesn't seem to be supported. I tried pasting the appropriate HTML code into a topic, but the SVG graphic doesn't show. Am I missing something, or is there a work-around?

Translating Help content to multiple languages

I am currently using RoboHelp 11, but will soon be moving to version 2017. I am planning to translate Help content to multiple languages and would like to ask the following questions please:

  • Is it best to create a new project for the translated content as a copy of the original project, or can translated content be added to the original project, and then be outputted using Conditional Build tags, for example?
  • For the above approaches, are there any functions in RoboHelp which could help with the translation process, including the tracking of topics that have been sent for translation, etc.
  • Any recommendations or "gotchas" for using RoboHelp for the translation of Help content? Languages may include both Asian and European languages.

How do I create Note: and Warning: type styles?

Hi Gurus!

Pretty sure I've seen a thread on this subject but I've been trying to find it for a few days now, and failed.

What I'm trying to do is create styles for notes, warnings and suchlike. You know the type:

Note: Remember to eat your 5 a day

Warning: Do not put underpants on after trousers!

type stuff, where the word Note: / Warning: appears automatically and the author just has to type in the note or warning text.

Any ideas/ hints / notes or warnings would be greatly appreciated

Regards

FrameMaker vs RoboHelp

Hello,

I've been asked to look into the possibility of switching our help system software from RoboHelp to FrameMaker, primarily due to the fact that the primary business unit in the company uses FM, and this would facilitate the need for them to integrate elements of our help file into theirs as needed (i.e. coordinating separate help systems for currently separate product lines resulting from a merger).

Currently we use RH 5, although the original/current plan is to upgrade to RH 7 around February.

Because our documentation is almost solely help files (with almost no printed documentation), FM's word processing capabilities do not seem especially relevant, so I'm left wondering what general advantage/disadvantages FM has in comparison to RH as a help authoring tool:

1. What advantages does FM have over RH? (from my research so far, support for DITA seems to be one example of an advantage)

2. What disadvantages does FM have in relation to RH? What would we be specifically losing out on?

3. What, if any, integration capabilities does FM have with RH that would be relevant for us? (again, given that we do not work with larger documentation such as manuals).

Although I believe the current thinking is to either stay with RH or switch to FM, using both (with or without the full Technical Communication Suite) may also be an option if there's enough benefit to using both.

Thanks in advance for any information regarding this issue!

I was wondering, is it possible to add a RoboHelp variable to a mailto link?

I'm trying to include the topic title as the subject in a mailto link.

E.g.

Thanks for your help.

In HTML view (RoboHelp 9) extra spaces are appearing between words in the code.  This does not affect the regular text, only the code.  Any suggestions to get rid of the extra spaces?

Text Popups and %20% issue

Help....please....

RoboHelp 2015

WebHelp output

On occasion, after publishing to WebHelp, some of our text popups open with a garble of %20% inserted between words. This does not happen all the time. There are two of working in one Help project folder. I handle the "master" make updates and generate, and then hand off the folder to another writer, who in turn does the same. We have both had this issue popup (pardon the pun) and thought by inserting the text into notepad first and then pasting into the popups, that resolved the problem. Nope.

This is what one of our popups "gone bad" looks like:

ID:%20Unique%20indicator%20used%20to%20identify%20the%20record%5Cr%5CnName:%20%20Descripti on%20of%20the%20record%5Cr%5CnIndex:%20Assigned%20based%20on%20user%20access%20a%20securit y%20rights.%5Cr%5CnIndicator:%20%20Status%20of%20the%20record.%5Cr%5CnWildcards%20can%20be %20used%20in%20a%20field%20with%20at%20least%20one%20character%20and%20an%20asterik.

Yet, in other places, it is perfectly fine:

Robohelp 8 Search not working

I upgraded a project from Robohelp 7 to Robohelp 8.  Before upgrading, the Search function in the published Robohelp worked fine.  Since upgrading, it finds things but not all of the time.  For example, I search for "lost" which I know is in a few of the topics.  Nothing is found.  Does anyone have an idea why this wouldn't be working?

Thanks!

Why font size is different in my CHM file?

$

I have been using RoboHelp 2017 and dealing with the following situation: I have a help with certain topics that show different font than applied to it. I can't understand the reason because I have been using the same Styles and Formatting applied to all topics, but only some of them have this discrepancy.

I will illustrate it to make it easier to understand.

This is my list how it appears when editing my topic in RoboHelp (correct font size);

RH_001.png

However, when I generate a Microsoft HTML Help output (CHM file), this is how the same text appear:

RH_003.png

I don't know how it happens and only on some words... If the same style is applied to all sentences...

Maybe someone can help me.. I am trying to fix it. Thanks in advance!

Project Manager not displaying some of the folders and files

$

Hi All

We have got a new instance of 2019 version of Robohelp. And, our project files are done on a different machine with Robohelp version 8. Now that we try to open and edit these files created n version 8, the project manager in 2019 does not show some of the files and folders (in both the views of Project Manager). However, the files and folders are copied to and present in the same folder where other files are put.

While upgrading the project to the new version, we got a message about one particular .gif file that it is not in scope of the project. However, that was for one particular file only.

Also, it is noticed that many of these missing files are shown in the broken links folder with no red icon against them. However, we do not see any broken links in version 8 of the Robohelp with the same sets of files and folders.

We do have three /four different documentation sets for various versions of the product and in all of these, the same set of folders (more or less) are missing from the project manager.

By manually creating the missing folders and importing files onto them from the local system, I was able to resolve the issue in one of these sets.

When contacted for technical help on this issue, we were told that a jump from v 8 to 2019 could have resulted in this strange behavior; and that it is advised to upgrade the files gradually from 8 - 11- 17 - 19 to avoid such issues. For  now, we have kept this option for later (hoping it would resolve the issue).

Anyone facing a similar issue? any insights?

n.b: please forgive any silly usages/descriptions here; I am using Robohelp after almost 8-10 years, and almost feel like a novice user

Thanks and regards,

Can I hide an existing topic from view in TOC and Search?

$

I've seen several approaches on this forum for ways to create a help topic and mask it from specific users, or from everyone except via a link.  However, all those approaches seemed to require creating the help topic in a specific way.  We have a situation where the topic already exists, and we would like to hide it from all users temporarily.  The existing topic is out of date and needs to be revised, but we are unable to revise it until some decisions are made by administrators.  In the meantime, we don't want people misled by the old procedures.  Is there a simple solution for this?

Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have a master project and right now linking to two child projects. I published the child projects to the correct file in the master project's SSL location. When I generate the output of the master file, the TOC from the master project is fine, but no information from the child projects. I've searched the forums and other's website for answers and haven't been able to correct my problem.

Missing images in Word Document

$

I am having a problem with some missing images when I generate a Word document from RoboHelp HTML. I have seen similar problems in these forums and have tried the solutions without success. I have Word 2002 SP3. I have images in my document that have conditional tags applied to them. Up until now, I have not had any trouble with them generating in Word. I added some more images (using RH to import them into my doc) and I set up the conditional tags to print those and not the others. In some cases, the images are generated and in others they are not. There is no X in its place just a blank line. I have tried erasing the .CPD file and re-generating. I have tried removing and re-inserting the image. Also, if I generate the html web help, the images are all there. No problem. I have tried embedding the images and using links and get the same result. I have not tried to just generate the PDF because I need to tweak the document in Word first before generating the PDF to make everything look good.

I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Robohelp. That didn't help either. The image properties all have none (not left or right). I am running out of ideas to solve this problem. Everything worked great before so I can't figure out what could possibly be wrong especially since the webhelp is fine. I also tried moving the project to my C drive. No change either. The project usually resides on a network drive.

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it since I have a document to print for a customer ASAP! Thank you in advance.

How to add jump to location within same topic?

$

We are migrating a client-server application to being a SaaS application.  In the process, we need to consolidate all of our 650+ context-sensitive topics into a much smaller number of what we're calling "page topics".  Each page topic will document all of the data entry fields, drop-down menus, checkboxes, and radio buttons available in a single data entry window of the SaaS application.  Since some of these windows contain dozens of data entry fields, etc., their page topics will be long.  We'd like to simplify the user's task of finding a specific data entry item by including a list of links at the top of each page topic that jump to all of the respective data entry items covered in the topic.

While I've created countless jumps between topics, I haven't been able to find a way to create jumps within a topic.  I currently use RH X5 on a Windows XP machine, but I am considering upgrading to RH 8.  Also, while the Help system in question is currently compiled as Microsoft HTML Help (.chm), I plan to move to WebHelp format for our SaaS application.  Is there a way to create intra-topic jumps in RH X5?  How about RH 8?

Many thanks for any suggestions you can make!

Want HTML Help Link to Open in New Window

Using TCS V1.3 with the latest patches.

Single source project from FM to RH -- output to HTML Help.

I'd like certain links in the HTML Help to open into a separate window. Is there a way to set this up from FM? Apparently, WebWorks has a setting to accomplish this task - I don't see a similar setting in RH.

Generate from Robohelp to MS WORD: Both Word doc map levels (Headings) & PDF Bookmarks are incorrect

$

Hello All,

Please review the following problem I am experiencing with my WORD output Document Map / PDF Bookmarks,

Thank you all for your time and assistance,

~PM

SOFTWARE VERSIONS:WIN 7, RoboHelp 8, WORD 2007

ISSUE: Generating TOC chapters from Robohelp 8 to MS WORD 2007, WORD document map levels (Headings) are incorrect or navigation trees are not consistent. RoboHelp 8->SSL configured and mapped, using a WORD template .dot.

SOLUTION GUIDANCE:

The PDF is generated from the word document that, in turn, is created from the RoboHelp 8 project. The PDF generation is configured to use heading styles to create bookmarks.

Note: Word styles are mapped to styles defined in the RoboHelp templates however; the resulting document/PDF will generate incorrect or inconsistent bookmarks.

PROBLEM ONSET:Unable to determine when this first occurred, looked at older generated "PDF's" hence, there were no bookmarks; probably due to not having the option in WORD converting/publishing into Adobe 'heading option' checked off.

DESCRIPTION:In the Adobe Reader, click on the View->Navigation Panel->Bookmarks (NOTE:this can also be seen in WORD 2007 'Document Map' left pane), the navigation trees are not consistent.

Expected result:The bookmark structure follows the structure of the document where the first level are chapters, second level of the navigation tree are topics, etc.

Actual result:The bookmark structure is not consistent and shows things like "Scenario 1", "Figure 1" on the same level as chapter headings.

EXAMPLE #1:

Click on the + sign next to the Introduction bookmark;

Expected result:It should show

Introduction

->Introduction

->Support and Training

Actual result:

Introduction

->Introduction

  ->Support and Training

EXAMPLE #2:

Click on the + sign next to the Preparing for Database Migration bookmark;

Expected result:It should show;

Preparing for Database Migration

->Required Steps for Certain Versions of Financials

->Any version running on SQL Server 7.0

->Version 3.x running on SQL Server 2000

->Version pre-4.3.11 running on SQL Server 2000

->Version 4.3.11 or later running on SQL Server 2000

Actual result:

Preparing for Database Migration;

->Required Steps for Certain Versions of Financials

->Any version running on SQL Server 7.0

->Version 3.x running on SQL Server 2000

->Version pre-4.3.11 running on SQL Server 2000

1. Upgrade 4.3.11 or later to 4.6 while running under SQL Server 2000.

2. Upgrade SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005/2008/2012.

->Version 4.3.11 or later running on SQL Server 2000:

Scenario 1

Scenario 2

and so forth...

EXAMPLE #3:

1) Open PDF

2) In the Adobe Reader click on the View->Navigation Panel->Bookmarks;

Expected result:The bookmark structure follows the structure of the document where the first level are chapters, second level of the navigation tree are topics, etc.

Actual result:The bookmark structure is not consistent and shows things like "FDP", "2. Click Next." on the same level as chapter headings.

EXAMPLE #4 (Visual):

Notice “Step / Action”, this text is coming from RoboHelp as ‘Normal’ Styles and is mapped to WORD as a ‘Normal’ Styles but WORD is reading it as “Outline Level” (Paragraph). See sample WORD screenshots below.

ATTEMPTS TO RECTIFY PROBLEM:

  1. This is NOT a problem if I generate a single chapter from RoboHelp TOC 'Chapter Layout'.
  2. I also tried all the chapters separately and there were no problems.
  3. When I generate all 24 chapters from my TOC 'Chapter Layout'  there are issues (e.g., single word like "Step / Action" text, nubered and bullited text become headings).

Links with Spaces in URL

$

I need to create links in my TOC to several existing PDFs that are going to be stored outside of my RoboHelp project. The problem is that these PDFs have spaces in their file names, for example: "Apples<space>Are<space>a<space>fruit.pdf"

RoboHelp 2015 doesn't like the spaces and (correctly) is converting the space to %20. The problem is that the URL to get to the PDF doesn't have the %20 - it has a space. What syntax do I have to use to make my link from the TOC open up the PDF?
